SHOULD WE CELEBRATE VALENTINE'S DAY OR NOT?
A flurry of romance for some, a senseless marketing campaign for others, Valentine's Day is divided.
Should we celebrate it or not? And if so, is there a single way to celebrate it?
To these two questions, we will answer by quoting X-Files: "The truth is out there."
This year, whether you are in a relationship or not, discover different ways to celebrate or not celebrate Valentine's Day.
If some people are so sceptical about this celebration, it's because its origins are somewhat obscure (like why Kenny always died in South Park).
Before diving into our topic, we tried to answer the question we've all asked ourselves:
Who invented this stuff?
"Past is past", let's talk about the next 14th February !

FUZZY ORIGINS
To enlighten you a little, historians have drawn up 3 theories.
Back when your ancestors wore togas and honoured Lupercus, the god of fertility, Valentine's Day had a very different face.
Between 13th and 15th February, the Lupercales took place, a festival intended to boost the fertility of the population and purify and expiate all offences committed against the gods. After sacrificing a goat, men collected the animal's skin in strips and went back to the city, whipping all those they met, especially women.
According to them, this helped to protect pregnant women from a bad birth and to favour the fertility of those who wished to have a child in the year. During his reign, the Emperor Augustus used these processions to reinforce his birth policy. (Source : History - Britannica)
This time, more in the spirit of our current Valentine's Day, we travel to 14th century England. February,14th would have given birth to a new tradition: the exchange of small notes between lovers, but also friends.
Why this date? It is said that it is the day on which the birds reproduce the most. However, it was not until the 19th century that the tradition really took off with the creation of "Valentines": "love cards" that couples and best friends sent each other.
In the 20th century, the custom continued but gradually became limited to couples.
According to some poets, this day was also the day when lovers chose their partners or renewed their commitment.
Valentine's Day is supposed to come from a martyr of the Catholic Church, Valentinus.
Here we are back in Rome, this time in the 3rd century AD!
The Roman emperor Claudius II prohibited marriages to motivate soldiers to serve more in war (we are also looking for the logic of this decision). Valentinus, a priest, kept on marrying couples clandestinely. According to this myth, he was jailed and executed on 14 February. As a result, this man was declared Saint Valentine, the holy figure of lovers.
Let's get back to Valentine's Day as you know it.
You are?
IN COUPLE ❤️ SINGLE 😎 GOOD QUESTION 🤷🏻♂️
YOU ARE IN COUPLE
For some couples, Valentine's Day is the perfect day to celebrate their love. It can also be a key event for big moments (marriage proposal, pregnancy announcement...).
For other people, it is a perfect pretext to go out, to be just the two of us, without any real connection to the romantic aspect of this celebration.
And then there are the couples for whom this day is just like any other! After all, love is not only demonstrated on 14th February (fortunately!) but every day. However, some people agree that this is a good opportunity to celebrate their relationship on this day which is dedicated to them worldwide. There are different ways to celebrate Valentine's Day as a couple, and they are all equally worthy.
A successful Valentine's Day? An evening that you are happy to spend with your partner.

(We'll let you answer that question). Let's be clear here: enjoying Guinness and going to an Irish-style pub does not make you Irish. Whether you want to join in the festivities or make an anti-Valentine's Day party, there are several options for you.
